Oxford is synonymous
with its famed
University and its
marvellous
buildings. It is a
delightful town to
explore on foot. We
concentrate on
architectural
photography and in
capturing the
classic images
associated with
Oxford - its
University, the
scholarly
atmosphere, punting
on the Thames, its
bridges, and
churches. Oxford was
founded by King
Alfred the Great and
developed as a
market town as a
place where 'Oxen
forded the river'
hence Oxford. Since
800AD, Oxford has
experienced a
layering of Roman
and Saxon
influences. It has
many famous
buildings, many
superb examples of
different styles of
architecture over
the centuries and a
tremendous village
atmosphere.
We start by first
climbing up the
Carfax Tower with
picture postcard
views of the
dreaming spires of
Oxford. We then walk
to the famed Christ
Church college
founded in 1525 by
Cardinal Worsley.
Inside is the
smallest cathedral
in England featuring
the Tom Tower
designed by Sir
Christopher Wren. A
pretty path leads
onto cobbled Merton
St. and Merton
College housing the
oldest library in
the country and its
fabulous selection
of medieval books.
Nearby is St. Mary
the Virgin - the
church of the
University since the
late 13th century.
After a delicious
lunch in one of the
many pubs, we
photograph Radcliffe
Square with its
several famous
buildings such as
All Souls College
and Brasenose
College and if time
permits, drive to
Blenheim Palace at
Woodstock, the home
of the Duke of
Marlborough.
If weather permits,
we go punting on the
Isis alongside Port
Meadow to the west
of the town; this
stretch of river is
both shallow and
gravelly, has
attractive scenery,
and is well supplied
with pubs (such as
The Trout Inn,
Wolvercote where
some of the
Inspector Morse
dramas were filmed).
Our second day is
spent in the heart
of the Cotswolds.
The Cotswold Hills
are for many people,
the quintessence of
the English
countryside.
Captivating villages
such as Bilbury,
Bourton on the
Water, Snowshill,
Stow on the Wold and
Castle Combe, all
steeped in their
medieval heritage
and their legacy as
the producers of the
finest wool in
Europe. We
photograph the tiny
scattered
farmsteads, the
golden Cotswold
sandstone buildings
shimmering in the
grasslands where the
early summer
wildflowers are
blooming and devote
a few hours to macro
photography of the
many unique and
varied flower
species. We strive
to always take the
tiny byroads and to
discover hidden tiny
villages nestled
into the hillsides . |
