THE TRIP: |
Tasmania is a land
best appreciated
without barriers
between you and the
environment. The
ancient forests,
colonial
architecture and
spectacular
coastlines of
Tasmania offer
inspiration. This
photographic
expedition includes
visits to the Blue
Tiers, Bay of Fires,
Freycinet and Maria
Island.
The northeast face
of the Blue Tier is
the cradle of the
rainforest of
northern Tasmania.
It was here that the
Gondwana forests
withdrew under the
assault of the ice
age and hid,
preserving at their
heart flora that
dates back 60
million years and
nurturing fauna that
exists no where else
on Earth. The Blue
Tier has the most
accessible
bio-diversity
outside World
Heritage areas and
is home to
vulnerable species
such as the unique
north east Forest
Snail, the Simpson’s
stag beetle, the
Grey Goshawk, the
Tiger Quoll and the
Tasmanian wedge
tailed eagle to name
just a few. It
is also a treasure
trove of human
heritage. Ancient
Aboriginal carvings
testify to the
Tier’s significance.
At the edge of Mt.
William National
Park, the
magnificent
wilderness coastline
known as the Bay of
Fires invites you to
experience its
dramatic landscape,
ecology and
wildlife. Led by
well-informed, young
Tasmanian guides,
small groups can
explore both the
fascinating beach
environment and the
rich diversity of
the nearby
woodlands.
Sand, surf, sea and
sun epitomise
Bicheno, a pretty
fishing town founded
on the sea and its
bounty. Nearby
there’s the
Governors Island
Marine Reserve with
fascinating
underwater scenery
and sealife.
