The
Blue Mountains have
justifiably earned
their reputation as
one of Australia's
leading photographic
destinations. The
area offers a
diverse range of
landscapes, delicate
close-up macro
photography studies,
remote valleys and
gorges, plunging
waterfalls, abundant
bird life and
opulent architecture
left over from a
bygone era.
Our workshop starts
with an early
morning dawn shoot
of the towering
crags which form the
Three Sisters. The
Jameson Valley lies
below, blue with the
hue from aerial haze
and providing the
contrasting backdrop
against the Three
Sisters, soon to
become washed in the
morning golden
light.
Our
program includes a
shoot at the Golden
Staircase which
gives magnificent
views of the valley
below. We stop for
morning coffee at
the Majestic Hotel,
an old spa hotel and
a wonderful example
of 1920's opulent
grandeur, of tea
dances and weekend
retreats from
another era. Its
then a short drive
to Mount Wilson.
These private
gardens are renowned
for their year-round
beauty; glorious
rhododendrons,
daffodils and
carpeted meadows in
spring, rich reds
and golds in Autumn.
In winter the sharp
clean winter light
is excellent for
panoramic shots over
the surrounding
valleys. On Saturday
night we relax in
the comfort of our
self-contained Blue
Mountains lodge with
a Yulefest party.
Our program on
Sunday includes a
walk on the
Wentworth falls
track, photographing
waterfalls and close
up nature shots.
Usually we do the
Overcliff Track &
Darwin's Walk and is
ideal for walkers
unsure of their
ability to handle
the strenuous climb
in and out of the
valley.
For the fitter
hikers, the 4km 4hr
climb down National
Pass and up through
the Valley of the
Waters (or
vice-versa) is
recommended, with a
descent of
approximately 200m
to shoot the
Waterfalls en route.
This will be our
12th Yulefest Blue
Mountains weekend
and is not to be
missed.
