In Andrew’s own words

My love & fascination with photography started at a young age as a child growing up in South Africa and England. My father was keen photographer shooting with a Leica lllc during his service in the RAF in Quetta & Burma in WWII

My first SLR camera was a Minolta XD-7 and I was off on a big adventure from London to Katmandu on a double decker bus. From 20 to 25 I had a corporate job with ITW and was a keen amateur photographer throughout this time. When I was 26 I hit the road again for extended travel through the Himalaya and SE Asia arriving in Perth, Australia in June 1982.

Living in Sydney in the 80’s was a fabulous time to be alive. Lots of job opportunities, a free and easy Aussie lifestyle, no CTY surveillance cameras, no pandemics and unlimited travel opportunities. In 1991 I decided to become a professional photographer & started my company Focus 10 Pty Ltd with the added benefit of running photography tours with the adventure company World Expeditions.

In the last 20 years Its been a whirlwind blur of adventure, the pleasure of having 4 kids and shooting numerous commercial assignments in Australia and around the world. I have photographed over 850 weddings & have taught & mentored 1000’s of students on Focus 10 photography courses. I have met many inspirational and fantastic people throughout my career. I have managed to squeeze in a huge amount of travel - all seven continents, all the major Himalayan treks, mountain biking in Mongolia, African wildlife safaris, canoeing down the Zambezi, travelling extensively in Australia and as a photography tour host of over 50 Australian and international photography tours. A constant throughout is an undiminished love in capturing timeless images.

Its an exciting time right now in the imaging field with New imaging technologies such as drones & smartphones changing everything. The way we use images is now ubiquitous with social media. We now see amazing quality at an affordable cost in full frame DLSR & mirrorless cameras, adventure cameras and drones have revolutionised wildlife & aerial photography. We are also seeing a retro revival with a whole new generation discovering film and the magic of the darkroom.

Photography as a hobby and /or as a profession offers countless opportunities if you are willing to be totally open minded and realistic in your expectations. Gaining photography skills blended with other areas offer a great way to earn money in a part or full time career capacity. New niches are opening up in photography - especially in the area of aerial, scientific and social media applications. There is now a continuous and high demand for imaging content. You will have a skill you can develop & refine as the years roll by. These imaging skills gained compliment many other professions- from computers to videography, cinematography - the list is extensive.

My advice for budding photographers is to just start experimenting and snapping away. The cost now is virtually zero compared to the expensive analog era of film.
Be continually seeking to up skill yourself in imaging technologies. Do not over capitalise by spending a fortune on camera gear. Look at the market you are aiming for & spend wisely. Develop your own style & niche. So whether its to get a quote for your wedding or a business project, a fresh, portrait for your resume or to discuss how we can assist you on the photography training front - we look forward to hearing from you.

Yours in Photography

Serena Pearce

Serena’s 30 year passion, energy and enthusiasm for travel, portrait and architectural photography has in recent years become a career with the establishment of Perth based Code Lime Photography in 2009. “What better way to combine my love of people, adventure, fun, colour and design than with photography”. Her work includes shooting many of Perth’s best beach and riverside properties for several of the cities leading real estate and architectural practices, portrait and commercial work plus two solo photography exhibitions.

Her travel adventures have seen Serena being chased by hippos on the Okavango River, supine in the sands of the Himba tribe, traipsing through the mountain villages of northern Vietnam and enduring the freezing overnight temperatures of Anzac Cove, just to capture that moment in time. Much of Australia has been seen from behind a camera lens - under the stars in the rugged Kimberley's, on deserted beaches in the pristine southwest, shooting the surreal outback images from Cue to Uluru to Arnhem Land to her backyard playground of Cottesloe beach.

Focus 10 and Code Lime Photography team up in Perth and WA running courses and right around Australia to jointly shoot commercial work and to run photography training programs. Serena is an accredited AIPP Professional Photographer.
